Certainly, painting en plein air (outdoors) must be very good for the soul. Despite having to wake at ridiculous hours to capture the golden morning light, I find the process to be highly restorative.

There are qualities of each medium I enjoy, and so I have yet to settle into one for painting outdoors. Some of the qualities I appreciate are practical and some are aesthetic. I like oils because of their timelessness and the ease of throwing down large painterly strokes and not getting bogged down in detail. I like pastels because of their brilliant colors and the speed with which it is possible to create a likeness. I like watercolor because, at least the way I am tempted to paint with it outdoors, it is so loose and freeing.
