Oil and Acrylic

My work in oil is typically in the alla prima (direct painting) style, and the quicker works from life (en plein air or with a live model) are done in an impressionist style. My studio work can be a lot more detailed; however, I am falling into a looser style even there, trying represent features with fewer strokes than I would have in the past.

I currently prefer oil painting on panels I make using Claessens Number 13 double-primed Belgian Linen adhered to aluminum panel using a dry mount press. I also sometimes work straight on the panel, or on a panel treated with acrylic gesso.

I do not use odorless mineral spirits or alkyd mediums for health and environmental reasons, and I prefer using more traditional materials (pure gum spirits of turpentine, homemade mediums, and Williamsburg cold wax medium) for their conservatorial, environmental, and health safety properties.

My plans for future studio work include experimentation with glazing in the indirect painting style of the old masters.
